The Breastfed Baby’s Guide to Pacifiers: Timing, Safety, and Oral Mechanics.

There is a lot of confusion about if or when to introduce a pacifier to a breastfed baby. While the right pacifier can support natural sucking patterns, a pacifier that isn’t the right fit for your baby’s oral needs can potentially interfere with feedings.
So, when is the right time to introduce a pacifier to a breastfed baby?
It’s important to remember that not all babies need a pacifier, and not all babies will take a pacifier. Some refuse them all together, which is absolutely normal. If your anti-paci baby needs help being soothed even when full, a pinky finger (nail short, hand washed, pad of the finger placed gently on baby’s hard palate to stimulate sucking reflex) can work wonders!
Let’s break down some general guidance to introducing a pacifier to your baby.
Breastfeeding first, pacifier later
In the first four to six weeks, building your milk supply and helping your baby learn to latch efficiently are crucial. Avoid offering a pacifier to baby as a way to stretch out the length of time between feedings. Offer your breast when your baby is displaying their hunger cues. When possible, it’s best to wait until your baby’s weight gain is established, your milk supply is predictable, and baby’s latch is effective before the introduction of a pacifier.
Remember: Safety first!
When choosing a pacifier for your baby, we want to make sure that it is all one (1) piece. Pacifiers that are made of multiple pieces (think: handle, nipple, mouth shield) do pose a very small risk of detaching.
Mechanics
Pacifiers that encourage a wide latch and active sucking are more supportive of breastfeeding than narrow ones. These pacifiers mimic how a baby uses their mouth at the breast. This is especially true if your baby has had any challenges learning how to breastfeed.
Confirming your baby has an efficient latch is where a manual osteopath or lactation consultant comes in! We make sure that your baby is using their mouth, tongue, and jaw well. We also will support you in finding the right pacifier for your baby’s specific needs.
