Garlic has been known for quite some time to be good for the heart. Now a meta-analysis published January 2012 in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture confirms that garlic is good for heart health.
This meta-analysis reviewed 26 studies and found that “overall, garlic was superior to placebo in reducing serum total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) levels”. Specifically garlic powder, or aged garlic extract, was more effective in reducing total cholesterol whereas garlic oil was more effective in reducing triglyceride levels in the blood.
It was also found that garlic did not have any effect on other lipid parameters such as low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) or apoliproprotein B. They meta-analysis did conclude that incorporating garlic therpy into treatment for patients with risk of cardiovascular disease is beneficial.
