It’s the holidays, and few things smell better than cloves, cinnamon and a hint of orange zest when the air is chilly and the Christmas tree is bright with light. The aromas are warm, familiar, and instantly trigger a childhood craving in all of us for our winter comfort of choice.

Naturally, the holiday brings with its lovely treats and aromas some tempting obstacles for those of us with nutrition, digestion, and healthy eating practices on the mind. To remedy, Cornerstone has put together something sweet to tickle the senses without the temptation to give into less-than-savoury snacks.

Each winter, we make our own air freshener! It’s as easy as a small pot on the stove, home to a few cups of water, whole cloves, cinnamon sticks, orange slices and cranberries. We keep ours on a very low temperature, and the uniquely festive aroma travels throughout the home in no time, leaving everything smelling as pleasant as the season.

HERE’S THE FULL RECIPE:

In a small pot:

  • 2-3 cups water
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • A dozen or so whole cloves (I don’t actually count, I just randomly dump some in…)
  • 2-3 orange slices, or peel
  • Handful of cranberries (we keep a bag in the freezer so they are always available!)
  • Other Options to change the scent: Lemon slices, splash of vanilla or maple extract

*Important to note, bring to a boil to get the smells releasing, and then decrease the element to the lowest temperature. Do not leave it unattended, and monitor regularly as the water level will decrease slowly – add more water as needed!

An all-natural holiday air freshener won’t just save you around the waist, as it’s also a healthy alternative that carries no toxins – a significant advantage over conventional air fresheners. Give it a try and let us know what you think!

It’s right around here that we typically remind patients that they can contact us by phone or online, but depending on the day, you might catch us on holiday! For a look at our adjusted hours between now and the new year, visit the Cornerstone Facebook page.

We hope you have a wonderful holiday season.

In health,
