The winter months can be long and dreary, and with it comes a number of vitamin and mineral deficiencies, all of which are very common. We lack these essential nutrients because of very natural reasons, so ensuring that we are getting what we need sometimes needs to be done through supplements.
Here is a list of 5 essential vitamins that you might be lacking this winter.
- Vitamin D
With the shorter and darker winter days, many of us feel like we don’t get out in the sunshine nearly enough, and that’s probably true. Getting outside is important to ensure that our bodies are getting enough Vitamin D because our bodies absorb this vitamin from sunlight through the skin. This is important when it comes to bone health, as well as in stimulating certain immune responses which protect us from colds and flus.
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids
These are essential when it comes to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and avoiding the winter blahs. Omega-3 fatty acids can help to boost your immune system, your mental focus and help with winter colds and flus.
Feeling down and blue? You might want to get your iron checked, especially if you’re getting a period every month (hello – blood loss!). Fatigue and exhaustion can sometimes be an iron deficiency. If you want to eat your iron make sure you consume your meat a little rarer than usual.
- Vitamin C
Feeling a cold coming on? Don’t reach for that orange as there’s a compound in it that can cause those viral infections to linger. But Vitamin C has been shown to decrease the frequency of cold and flus, plus keep your skin looking young and healthy – so make sure you don’t miss out on that essential vitamin.
Instead of reaching for that vitamin C when you feel a flu coming on, reach for zinc. It’s been shown to cut in half the time that you’re sick. For a sore throat those zinc lozenges will change your world, just make sure that they’ve got a bit of copper in them as well.
Ensuring that we are getting the proper vitamins and minerals is something we all need to stop and consider, especially during the winter months.
